I just needed to blog about this to illustrate the trouble (and power) with social media. A few weeks ago one of the largest retailers in South Africa, Pick ‘n Pay, printed ads in Afrikaans newspapers with horrible spelling errors. Although they apologised in the newspaper the following day, the errors were Twitpic’d and sent around by Afrikaans office employees causing a viral stir around Afrikaans speaking people who haven’t seen the printed apology. Despite having a Twitter profile and Facebook page Pick ‘n Pay made additional spelling errors in their apologies when they were notified of these errors on Twitter and Facebook. It shows, in my opinion, how damaging the viral spread of social media can be to a big brand. I might be in the minority but I surely won’t go to Pick ‘n Pay anymore.
